Join us for a hands-on day of recycling plastic in our Hove workshop! Melt waste plastic, marble your own colours, and create something to take home with you.
As well as being a practical day, you’ll also learn how we've merged traditional crafts with modern materials, and what sustainable design and materials actually mean.
What you make on the day is up to you: you could make a set of coasters, a vase, a board, a piece of art for your wall, a candle holder, or even a sculpture!Detailed description:
ON THE DAY
10am start, late afternoon finish depending on group size.
We want this fun and practical day to inspire you to see waste as a raw material, and to think creatively about its possibilities.
The day will start with a meet and greet, and an informal talk and Q&A, and sorting the plastic you’ll be making your pieces out of. We’ll then melt the plastic and mix your colours.
Lunchtime usually lasts about 40 minutes, at around 12:30. We have a microwave if you want to bring lunch with you. Alternatively there are some fab cafés just down the road, as well as supermarkets and other food shops on Western Road.
After lunch we’ll explore layering and marbling techniques, and finally we’ll press your pieces or hand shape them. There’ll also be a carving demonstration for anyone who’s hand shaped their piece.
Tea, coffee and water will be provided throughout the day, as well as some homemade snacks (vegan and gluten free) to keep you going through the afternoon!
When we’re all done (4 - 5pm depending on group size), if anyone wants to stick around for a chat, we’ll have various drink options waiting in the fridge, and we can raise a glass to all your hard work and wonderful creations!
We’re so excited to meet some like-minded people who want to engage with solutions to some messy waste problems. We hope you can join us!
Hello! We are Weez and Merl, a due that have been recycling plastic in our Hove studio for over 8 years. Last year we decided to start running workshops and we've absolutely loved it - it’s been so fun and exciting to see everyone’s ideas come to life!
Our passions for design, traditional craft skills and making by hand, are combined with a desire to utilise waste materials. Our ultimate goal is for plastic to be regarded as a precious material not worthy of ending up in landfills, incinerators and oceans.
Originally transferring skills learned from the craft of woodworking, we have found many methods of working with recycled LDPE plastic by hand, and our workshops give you a chance to experience this first hand!
If you would like to request for alternative dates not currently showing in availability, please contact the host directly via private message
We welcome you to bring your own waste LDPE plastic (symbol 4) to recycle, if you want to!
All materials and personal protective equipment will be provided, so just wear practical warm clothing and footwear that you wouldn’t mind getting dirty, just in case.
We will run through the health and safety of each process before doing it to avoid accidents, and we will only let you do things that you are capable of doing. Anything you’re unable to do, we’ll do for you!
You will not be liable for accidental damage to equipment, except where damage has been caused as a result of recklessness or willful negligence.
If there’s anything related to your ability that you think might affect your day in the workshop, please just let us know in advance in case we can make arrangements to optimise your experience.
Depending on your ability, we cannot guarantee that you’ll be able to participate in all activities, however anything you’re unable to do, we’ll assist with in order to complete your take-home piece.
Children under 16 are welcome to come along for free to observe with their parent/carer - please just let us know who you’d like to bring with you in advance.
