About the experience

Experience Duration : 2 hrs 30 mins
Experience Summary:

Come along for an authentic boozy night out in Detroit, following Prohibition era hot spots and themed bars across the city. With rum being one of the biggest exports of Detroit during this period of history, this is the real deal for both visitors and locals looking for a taste of Motor City’s vibrant past. Take a liquored walk through the ages and taste what had bootleggers calling this their ‘dream city’.

Detailed description:

If you’re looking for a fun evening fuelled by a healthy dose of cocktails and a smattering of history then this is the experience for you. We will be visiting three of Detroit's most happening rum bars, all with close ties to the city’s past.

Be wowed by old drinking favourites and modern twists on old-school cocktails. All promise to be big on flavour and to take you right back to the history of the ‘rum-running' (smuggling illicit liquor) days that were part and parcel of 1930’s Detroit.

With beautifully themed locations and bartenders that truly know their stuff, this is a rum drinker's dream. As speakeasies go, Detroit is home to some of the world's best, and so this tour pulls in a variety of guests - both travellers and Detroit natives. Cabaret and burlesque performances are also part of the draw, with an array of wild talent performing in the venues. Prep for an evening unlike anything else in the city!

About the host

Hey! Thanks for stopping by. I am Emmanuel, a born and raised Michigander. My family has lived in Detroit since my great-great grandparents moved here from Chicago in the 1920’s.

Having such long family ties with this city has made me a proud patriot and have always craved learning more about its history and past. So…it was instinct for me to learn about Detroit as a rum Mecca and to experience as much as I could about life how it was for my great - grandparents and their fellow bootleggers way back when.

Day to day I work as a journalist for a local Arts & Culture magazine. I enjoy a good night out with my friends, discovering new bars and restaurants that have deep ties with Detroit's past. I wanted to share my insights and secrets with others in the city - whether you’re visiting from elsewhere, or based here and eager to see the city differently. What better way to do it than with great company and great rum?!
